To introduce the city’s Transgender Issues Work Group and the work it’s done so far, Minneapolis will hold a Transgender Equity Summit 1 p.m.–8 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Humphrey Center for Public Affairs.
The group, established in March, examines issues the transgender community in Minneapolis face and will provide a summary of the process it follows and an update on the work it’s done so far.
Nationally recognized Anjelica Ross, co-founder of the Trans 100 annual recognition celebration, will be a featured speaker at the event.
At the summit, there will be tables staffed with members of the City of Minneapolis Police Department, Fire Department, Human Resources and Civil Rights Department.
Community organizations such as OutFront MN, Rainbow Health Initiative and Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition will also have staff and information at the summit.
The Minneapolis Transgender Issues Work Group’s goals are to engage the broader community and make policy recommendations for the city government aimed to affect the lives of transgender Minneapolitans.
Members of city departments, council offices, the mayor’s office, and the community make up the group and are focusing on areas of the city — police relations, employment, health, civic participation and public spaces — that affect transgender people that could be improved.
In specific, they are examining things such as public restrooms, homelessness, access to health care and neighborhood groups.
